Matt Mays & Adam Baldwin @ The Starlight – 23 Oct 2013
I am a bit slow in putting this up but better late than never. A couple weeks ago, concert wingman Bryan and lady friend Kristen and I went to see Matt Mays & Adam Baldwin at The Starlight in Waterloo. Frequent readers might remember that Bryan and I went to see Matt Mays in Hamilton back in March. That was sadly Jay Smith’s second last show before his unexpected passing two nights later in Edmonton. That was a hell of a show and Matt and the boys blew the roof off the place. Bryan and I have wanted to see Matt do an acoustic show for quite a while. There are lots of videos on YouTube of ones he has done back east. So when the solo acoustic tour was announced we jumped on it.
Matt’s regular guitar player, Adam Baldwin, is opening for the tour having just released is first EP which is fantastic. Go pick it up or download it at www.adambaldwin.ca. He is hilarious and very very good. Matt’s set, for which Adam accompanied for the majority, was not entirely acoustic. Matt played a twelve string acoustic while Adam rocked it on his Telecaster. The set covered songs from Matt’s entire catalogue. There were some great alternative arrangements of songs, most notably “Cocaine Cowgirl” and “City of Lakes”. What a treat to hear them done differently than the record. No “Dull Knife” unfortunately. The encore included Matt on keys and Adam on acoustic doing “Your Heart” after a shout out request from Bryan.
Great concert. One of the best in ages. To see Matt & Adam in an intimate, sit down acoustic setting was a real treat. I wished I had brought my good camera but these photos will have to do.
